Peacocks in the Community

The management and staff of the Peacocks Shopping Centre understand and appreciate the important role the Centre has to play not only as a vibrant retail destination but also a major asset to the community which in serves. This presents many opportunities to be a focal point for community activities as well as an example of business best practice in one of the greenest boroughs in the UK.

Environmental

• The Peacocks is accredited to ISO 14001 for environmental management and has a programme of continuous improvement to control all aspects of its impact on the environment including, energy, waste and water usage.
• In March 2007 The Peacocks was selected by Business in the Community and the British Council of Shopping Centres to launch and host the inaugural Sustainability Exhibition opened by HRH The Prince of Wales.

Education

• In association with Surrey Education Business Partnership, The Peacocks Centre has close links with all schools within its catchment. The programme of support and engagement includes sponsorship of Business Games in four local secondary schools, providing mentors and facilitators for business related activities as well as a Living Languages programme for to raise awareness of the diversity of the local community
• Year 10 and 11 students from local schools are also given the opportunity to attend mock interviews with members of the Peacocks management team to prepare themselves for when they do it for real for the first time.

Local Community and Charities

• Each year The Peacocks partners with several local charities to allow them to use the malls from time to time to raise awareness of their aims as well as much needed funds. These include The Woking Hospice, Royal British Legion (Woking), Terrence Higgins Trust and the Woking Branch of the Salvation Army.
• In 2009 The Peacocks was the focal point for a two week local campaign to encourage 16-24 year olds to give up some of their free time to volunteer to help with local projects. “Could You Be A Modern Day Superhero?” was a great success with hundreds of local youngsters signing up to volunteer and rounded off with a super hero themed fashion show.

Business Links

• The Peacocks Centre Manager is Chairman of the Woking Town Centre Initiative, a Partnership organisation made up of the local authority and other local businesses. Its aim is to promote Woking as the place to do business as well as organising successful events in the town centre to enhance the vibrancy and attractiveness to visitors to Woking.
• A representative of the Peacocks team also attends meetings held by Woking Chamber, Transport for Woking and Business Link Surrey in order to ensure that the scheme is well connected and informed about events and activities that are occurring in the local area.
