The Peacocks car park (Blue car park), together with the Red and Yellow car parks, is collectively displayed as the Shopper's car park on the variable message signs located on the approach roads.
Blue Badge Holders may register with Woking Borough Council so that their vehicle registration number is recorded and will be recognised by the automatic number plate recognition system installed within the car park barriers. This will permit entry and exit to the car park without the need to draw a ticket at the barrier or use the "pay on foot" paystations.
In addition, all Blue Badge holders who register will be issued with a proximity card, which will allow them to enter and exit the car park barriers if they are travelling in a different car or the recognition system is not in operation.
Blue Badge holders who do not live in the Borough will also be able to register, but will be required to pay a charge. The charge for the initial application will be £50 per year or part thereof, up until the expiry date of the current Blue Badge, and then an annual charge of £50 thereafter.
Blue Badge holders will need to complete an application form to register for their season ticket and, if they are a resident of the Borough provide proof of this (such as a recent utility bill) to obtain the season ticket for free. An application form can be picked up from the Civic Offices and from the Car Park Control Office which is located in the drop-off area of the Shopper's car park.
There are extra wide disabled persons parking spaces, usually adjacent to the lifts.
Woking's scheme for people with mobility impairments has its own parking area (The Peacocks level 1). Tri walkers, scooters, self propelled and powered wheelchairs are available for hire. Telephone 01483 776612 for more information.
An extensive, multi-million pound programme to significantly improve the car parks in Woking town centre is now underway. The programme, which is being carried out in phases over a period of four years, will bring the three town centre parking facilities up to the same high standard as Victoria Way Car Park and will lead to a more positive experience for residents and visitors alike. The programme is scheduled for completion in 2011.
While the work is being carried out, the Council's contractors, Matrix, will need to close small sections at a time, and alternative parking areas will always be clearly signposted. Every effort will be made to reduce disruption to a minimum, and activities will be significantly scaled down from October to January each year to minimise disruption during the busy Christmas shopping period.
The refurbishment programme will include:
Customers are also advised that they may notice an odd smell emanating from the car park. The smell is a result of coatings, based upon poly methyl methacrylate, which is being used to protect the car park from water damage in future years. Matrix would like to assure customers that this is not a cause for concern and does not pose a risk to health. Further information about poly methyl methacrylate will be posted up in the car parks.
